As was reported on Wednesday by the Associated Press, Mars Inc., the third largest employer in Greenville, has ditched the racially stereotypical name “Uncle Ben’s†rice and rebranded the product Ben’s Original in moving forward to remove insulting packaging that had been accepted until the complaints of minorities were heard.
“Mars has done an excellent job delivering on its promise to engage the local Greenville community as well as Mississippi’s state leaders and advocates – to ensure our diverse voices are heard. The Ben’s Original announcement today reflects that and shows the company’s principles and commitment in action,†said District 12 Mississippi Senator Derrick T. Simmons, Senate Democrat Minority leader.
“I’m proud to have led and worked with Mayor (Errick) Simmons and other state leaders to remove the Confederate flag as the state’s official flag. Now, the evolution of such an iconic brand to be more inclusive and equitable is yet another important step in making sure everyone has a seat at the table.â€
Uncle Ben’s has been in Greenville for 42 years and they are one of several companies that changed branding as a result of what they think some perceive as offensive and racially insensitive packaging or language as cries for equal justice that were heard all over the country these past few months.
As a result, violent protests erupted across America this summer as an organized marxist movement and Antifa terrorists terrorized major American cities as they usurped the peaceful protests over the senseless police killings and brutalization of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and other black citizens.
